  • Honors courses

Why should I take Honors courses?

Honors academic work enables you to actively engage the material, learn about scholarly and creative processes by participating in them, and personalize your learning experience through imaginative, critical analysis and application. Honors academic credits ar designated on your transcript for graduate schools and employers to see.

How many Honors courses should I take each semester?

In order to progress toward graduation with Honors, it is generally recommended that you register for one or two honors courses (1- 6 units) each semester. You are not required to take Honors courses every semester in order to remain in the College.

How are Honors courses different from regular courses?

Honors courses are generally smaller than regular courses, are most often taught by faculty, and are reserved for Honors students. You can expect personal attention, active discussions, in-depth analysis of the subject matter, and the opportunity to refine your oral and written communication skills. Some foundations courses, such as English Composition and math courses, are not taught by faculty members but rather by well-regarded teachers with graduate-level credentials. Similarly, some labs or discussion groups may be led by non-faculty members who work collaboratively with the faculty member who teaches the co requisite course.

The on-line contract form is available to students who have updated their status for the current semester.

    When are contracts due?

Contracts are due by 5:00 p.m. on the last day to drop a class using WebReg. No exceptions.

When do faculty have to notify the Honors College that the contract is complete?

Faculty should notify the College one week prior to the end of classes. The exact date is on the contract form.

How many courses can be taken by contract?

This can vary, depending on your class standing and major. See an Honors advisor for more information. Contact: Barbara Whittlesey.

Are there clubs & organizations especially for Honors students?

Yes, you may want to consider getting involved in the Honors Student Association, a social and philanthropic club open to all students. Or, Honors students seeking a leadership and advisory role may join the Honors Student Council. Many UA Honors students also join honorary societies at each class level - Primus and Preludes for freshmen, Sophos and Spires for Sophomores, etc. Membership in these societies is not based on Honors student status.

What is the best way to find out about social & cultural events at UA?

There isn't really one best way, but some suggestions are: subscribe to the Honors Listserv (Eclectic Bits focuses on UA opportunities and activities), read the Daily Wildcat, review the master calendar of events, and watch for postings in residence halls.

Honors Forum luncheons provide UA Honors students, staff, and faculty members the opportunity to interact in an informal setting and hear a presentation by a distinguished member of our community of scholars.

    Honors listserv

The Honors College administers two listservs for the general Honors student body: "Honors" and "Eclectic Bits". Each list provides a quick and convenient means of keeping up-to-date of all the latest information of interest to Honors students. Listserv bulletins will be posted daily or weekly by Honors College staff and can be retrieved from your personal electronic mail account. Honors students automatically subscribe to the "Honors" listserv when they officially join and/or update their Honors status on-line each semester. Failure to officially join Honors or update Honors status each semester results in cancellation of the "Honors" listserv subscription for that semester. The "Eclectic_Bits" listserv is optional and students may choose to subscribe and may cancel the subscription at any time.

What kind of information is provided via the "Honors" listserv?

These are messages that originate in The Honors College, such as information about:

    • Honors Student Council
    • Honors Forum Lunches
    • Undergraduate Research Grant Program

    What are Honoraries?

Many Honors students choose to get involved in campus honoraries. What are they? Honoraries typically recognize and promote academic achievement, community service, and UA leadership. Many are campus-based and others have a national affiliation. In either case, membership is generally selective. For information about national honor societies, you might choose to visit the Association of College Honor Societies' web site for a list of member societies. At UA, honoraries with membership based on class standing include:

    • for freshmen: Primus, Preludes
    • for sophomores: Sophos, Spires
    • for juniors: Chain Gang, Chimes
    • for seniors: Bobcats, Mortar Board.
    • for students of any level: Clareo

Among the prestigious national honoraries are: Blue Key National Honorary, Mortar Board Senior Honorary, and Golden Key National Honor Society. Each of these provides academic recognition, job and career opportunities, scholarships & awards, and leadership and community service opportunities. Consider whether or not honoraries are for you and if so, seek membership and possibly a leadership role! You'll find yourself in good company with other Honors students.

Other honoraries are comprised of members based on academic area of interest and include: Psi Chi (Psychology Honorary), Phi Sigma Tau (Philosophy Honorary), Theta Tau (Engineering Honorary). While most UA honoraries invite members during their time at UA, the most prestious honorary - Phi Beta Kappa - nominates members during the senior year and offers lifetime membership.
