History

The Baird Foundation has a long tradition of recognizing and supporting Arizona students. Established in 1948 by James A. Baird, builder of the Lincoln Memorial and New York City’s Times Building, the Baird Foundation is dedicated to supporting the pursuit of excellence in gifted students. The Foundation will fund 10 new scholarships for the 2008-2009 school year. Baird Foundation members will actively participate in welcoming, mentoring, and interacting socially and personally with the new scholars. The Fall 2009 freshman class of 10 will join the 30 Baird Scholars who are currently enrolled at The University of Arizona, all of whom have distinguished themselves by taking an active role in the University’s community of scholars.

Selection

The Foundation requests the assistance of Arizona high school counselors in identifying one student at each high school in the state whom they feel would be a deserving candidate for the scholarship. The UA and Baird Foundation selection committees will consider students who have consistently and effectively displayed the characteristics that define a leader. Applications materials are sent directly to Arizona high schools in August and the application deadline is traditionally in mid-October. Applications are not distributed to individual students.

Award

The amount of the scholarship is $10,000 for the academic year and is renewable for an additional three years provided the student maintains a 3.20 grade point average. Because of the generous dollar value of the Baird Scholarship, the Foundation requires that students accept no other major scholarships that they may be offered; however, this award can supplement other University of Arizona scholarships.
