Dr. Richard Kissling Dr. Richard Kissling passed away at age 68 on Saturday, April 5 after a long
and courageous battle against diabetes, leukemia and heart disease.  A
memorial service will be held in the patio of Slonaker House on Friday,
April 11, 2008 at 1 p.m.

Dr. Kissling completed his B.S. in Mathematics and Chemistry at Otterbein
College in Westerville Ohio in 1961.  He received a Ph.D. in Physical
Chemistry in 1968 at the University of the Pacific.  He was an Assistant
Professor of Chemistry in 1968-69 at California State Polytechnic University
before joining Heidelberg College where he taught for ten years beginning in
1969 attaining the rank of  Associate Professor of Chemistry.

He is survived by his wife, Pat, his son, Ken, his daughter, Carol, his
son-in-law Rich Jacobsen, and his guide dog, Orea.  He also is survived by
his brother, Dr. Robert Kissling and his sister, Jo Clark. Pat and Richard
were an amazing team and their love and devotion is an inspiration for all.

Dr. Kissling spent 18 years in Honors and 25 years at the University of
Arizona before retiring as Associate Dean in July 2005.  Dr. Kissling was
the heart and soul of Honors during his UA career.  He knew more about the
university-- its ever-changing curriculum, its stellar faculty and its
evolving policies--than the rest of the Honors staff combined.  He taught
two Honors colloquia regularly, The Spirit of Inquiry and The Examined Life
and started the Forum Lunch series to provide a venue for student-faculty
interaction and sharing research.  He will be remembered for touching the
lives of countless students, advising them in times of trouble and triumph,
celebrating their successes, and providing caring, individual attention to
each and every one.  His ties to students and faculty extend far and wide;
he will be missed.
