The iPlant Collaborative (iPC) is a nascent, NSF-funding project to develop an advanced cyberinfrastructure to facilitate the solutions of grand challenge problems in plant sciences.  The iPC has an opening for a student systems administrator during the summer of 2008 with the possibility of part-time employment during the school year, depending on student schedule and performance.  The selected individual must be highly motivated and willing to learn new technologies.  This position is an excellent opportunity for the right individual to learn about virtualization, enterprise storage, systems integration, and implementing open source software in the context of a novel national collaboration project.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities include:
* Windows and Mac OS X desktop/laptop user support
* Linux and Windows server administration, such as installing operating systems, creating accounts, file sharing, networking, and hardware and software maintenance
* Database administration, primarily with MySQL or PostgreSQL
* Installation and configuring of open-source software

Qualifications:
* Excellent communication skills
* Excellent problem solving skills
* Must be able to prioritize tasks and work with minimal supervision
* Must have an excellent customer service attitude
* Previous systems administration experience preferred
* Must be an "advanced" user of Windows or Mac OS X
* Must have a solid understanding of systems and networking concepts
* Familiarity with Linux is helpful but not required

Hourly Rate:
Up to $11 DOE

What Is The Aurora Foundation?

The Aurora Foundation is a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit organization, founded May 2001 in Tucson, Arizona. We are an inclusive, grass-roots organization made up of many volunteers.

The foundation’s two-part mission is to enhance and expand social justice for women, younger and older, with disabilities by

ü   developing the leadership and advocacy skills of young women and girls 14-25 years of age with disabilities through our Leaders for a Lifetime^© program and providing mentoring with experienced women with disabilities through our More Than Mentoring program; and

ü   enlightening and educating people in communities, our nation, and the world about the talents, skills, and knowledge that women, younger and older, with disabilities possess and can contribute to developing the excellence of communities, businesses, government, and education systems.

What Is Aurora’s ‘Internship’ Philosophy?

The philosophy of the internship program is that an internship experience must be meaningful to the intern and support her/his goals.  It should provide the opportunity for an intern to grow and enhance her/his leadership skills; build on her/his strengths; and expand her/his understanding, respect, and acceptance of people, especially young women and girls, with disabilities. Aurora does not ‘slot’ an intern into a particular program or event or into particular tasks/activities. Rather, the intern chooses the experience she/he wants to have within the programs, events, and overall foundation activities.

Who Can Apply and What Is the Application Process?

Women and men who are enrolled as full-time students at a university or community college or who are full-time junior or senior high school students AND have good-excellent academic standing are welcome to apply. Effective July 15, 2008, an application is available on the foundation’s website at www.planetaurora.org.

Once an applicant has completed and submitted an application, she/he will be invited to attend an information session followed by an interview with a staff member. The location, dates, and times for the sessions will be posted on the website August 11, 2008. We ask applicants to sign up for one of the sessions and a brief interview, no later than the day before the orientation. Applicants will be selected following completion of the application and interview process.

What Should Interns Expect of Aurora?

Once students are selected for an Aurora internship, they will attend an orientation and training session about the foundation’s programs and events and then decide the program, event, or administrative internship experience in which she or he would like to volunteer. The intern chooses the experience she/he wishes to have within the scope of Aurora’s programs, events, and operational areas.

Intern tasks/activities are designed to ‘fit into’ interns’ class and work schedule. Interns complete tasks in a time frame developed collaboratively with an Aurora staff person. The intern will then develop an individualized calendar of her/his dates/times to volunteer.

The foundation provides supervision of and feedback to each intern about her/his performance. Aurora staff will work with each intern to enable a successful and enjoyable learning experience. Each intern receives a certificate of completion when she/he has performed the internship responsibilities with satisfactory performance.

In addition the interns are invited to participate in monthly get-togethers to connect with other interns and the foundation’s Dream Team and Board of Directors and share their experiences and insights.

What Does Aurora Expect of Interns?

Since the Aurora-Leader internship program began in 2002, the most successful students are women and men who unequivocally share a passion for the foundation’s vision and mission and have a strong desire to work toward social change aimed at enhancing and expanding social justice for women, indeed all persons, with disabilities. 

These students demonstrated

ü   excellent time management skills

ü   strong drive, persistence, and effort to complete tasks at the highest quality possible

ü   skills and desire to work independently on assigned tasks/activities

ü   ability to follow through on completing tasks/activities over time

ü   effective interpersonal skills, particularly working in a team environment

ü   excellent oral and written communication skills

Internships may be for a semester or for the entire academic year. Ideally, an academic-year internship often provides a more engaging and fulfilling experience for the student and for the foundation. We welcome either semester or full-year interns, however.

Those who wish to apply for an internship with Aurora will be expected to volunteer a minimum of 6 hours per week. Many interns volunteer 8-10 hours per week. Those students who intern with the expectation of receiving course credit often volunteer for more than 10 hours per week.

At the beginning of an internship, each intern will establish a regular weekly meeting time with a staff member. Communication between the staff member and interns is very important, since interns do not work in the foundation office.  Interns are expected to respond to internship-related email and phone messages as soon as possible on the day the email or voice messages are sent and no later than 24 hours.

What Internship Experiences Are Provided?

Every program and event is available for internship experiences, as are operational/ administrative experiences.

Programs include: disABLED Divaz Workshop Series...assisting in planning and delivering twice-monthly four-hour leadership, advocacy, and self-growth workshops for young women with disabilities beginning in September... Girls’ Journeys from the Margins™... planning and implementing a workshop series to enlighten and educate young women with disabilities about the power of filmmaking for creating social change aimed at enhancing and expanding social justice for all persons with disabilities .... Aurora’s ‘FOUR WINDS’^©... planning, laying out, and writing an opt-in bimonthly e-NEWS publication written by, for, and with women, younger and older, with disabilities.

Events also include exciting opportunities: ... to plan and implement the first of many Aurora Habitat for Humanity Builds of a home for a woman with a disability... planning and fundraising for Aurora’s 2^nd annual Cool Chicks Cool Dudes international event for summer 2009 ... plan an even more successful 4^th annual disABLED Divaz Fashion Show for October 2009 ... design and implement the Girls’ Journeys from the Margins film forum in partnership with a local theatre.

There are also operations/administrative-oriented internship experiences. For example, for someone who would like to participate in a grant writing team; assist in maintaining and expanding databases; work with our webmaster on maintaining the website; and other activities related to the operational infrastructure, these experiences also are available.

The Steven M. Gootter Foundation

2007-2008 lnternshlp Program

Position

We are currently searching for an intern who will focus on fundraising, event planning and manage a donor database. The successful candidate will receive hands-on experience with the Steven M. Gootter Foundation

Description

The Steven M. Gootter (SMG) Foundation is a is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that works to increase awareness of sudden cardiac death among those who may be at risk, it fosters education among the public and health care professionals and it funds scientific research into the causes of and treatments for sudden cardiac death.

In existence since 2005, the SMG Foundation is rapidly becoming a prominent philanthropic organization in the Tucson community. Their fundraising events include a tennis exhibition tournament and a gala dinner. To date they have raised more than $250,000 annually. Desired Qualifications, Responsibilities and Abilities

We are looking for a hardworking undergraduate or graduate student in business, communications, non-profit or fundraising management, or related field with strong communication skills. This individual will work closely with the Steven M. Gootter Foundation Board on important internal and external communication programs with special attention assisting in planning our annual large-scale Gootter Grand Slam Gala and Tennis Exhibition/Tournament, write general correspondence as needed, and assist with record-keeping.

Experience or desire may be substituted for education. Applicants should be able to devote at least 8 -12 hours per week, to this program for six to eight months.
