The Institute combines substantive professional experience for 30 hours a week with a challenging academic experience. Xtreme Discovery Teams (XDT) is a new outreach initiative out of The Honors College that reaches out to students at the middle and high school levels. XDT will build teams of Honors undergraduates by department and major to visit schools and engage students in the classroom. The goal of XDT is to inspire and motivate these students to begin thinking about and envisioning themselves in college.

 

XDT is currently recruiting responsible, motivated, hard-working Honors students interested in volunteer outreach at the middle and high school levels. All majors are welcome to apply. Priority deadline is December 3rd, 2009. Become an XDT member today!

Honors College Xtreme Discovery Teams

The Honors College Xtreme Discovery Teams (XDT) is a program that allows current Honors undergraduates to engage middle school and high school students in Tucson and in surrounding communities. Students participate in Honors Discovery Workshops which will enhance their motivation for a college education. The main goal of XDT is to create awareness of the benefits of university education as well as prepare students for possible admission to the University of Arizona.

Time Commitment:

Volunteers will…

  1. Be available for training mid-January
  2. Meet with XDT Coordinator regularly.
  3. Visit two to three schools in the course of the spring semester

Qualifications:

A XDT volunteer must…

  1. Be a current Honors Student at the University of Arizona
  2. Have a genuine interest in working with students of ages 12 – 18
  3. Be responsible, mature, reliable, and flexible.
  4. Be enthusiastic and knowledgeable about The Honors College and the University of Arizona
  5. Have a positive attitude
  6. Be energetic, sociable and able to take initiative
  7. Work well in teams
  8. Be eligible to drive in Arizona
  9. Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  10. Have experience or interest in leading activities and working in teams
  11. Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better
  12. Undergo a background check as required by Arizona law to volunteer with minors

Responsibilities

  1. Drive University owned vehicles to different school sites
  2. Interact with Middle School and High School students in the Tucson area
  3. Create or use provided activities to do workshops with students in grades 6 – 12.
  4. Meet with other volunteers for logistics and planning of activities.

The NEM Lab seeks enthusiastic, graduate school–bound research assistants (RAs) to work on an intervention study concerned with aging caregivers of persons with neurocognitive disorders, including dementia, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, and stroke patients with aphasia. This project will provide a rich environment in which you will have a positive and beneficial learning experience and a rare opportunity to participate in translational research. RAs will be involved in multiple aspects of the project such as: advertising, recruiting and screening participants, data entry, collecting and analyzing behavioral data, assisting with the collection of biological and genetic data, and required participation in RA meetings and discussions.

Expectations:

• A one-year commitment must be made upon being invited into the

lab so that there is sufficient time for training and hands-on experience.

Undergraduate Research Opportunity

Researchers with the UA Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic undergraduate student worker to assist on an NSF funded research project for the 2009-2010 academic year. The project is developing centuries long tree-ring chronologies for reconstructing a record of the North American Monsoon rainfall in the southwestern United States. A more detailed project overview is available at http://monsoon.ltrr.arizona.edu/.

The ideal candidate would be a full-time undergraduate student at the UA with some coursework in the physical or natural sciences and an interest in tree rings or the climate of the Southwest. This project has outstanding potential for a student seeking a senior thesis topic, and therefore students from the honors college are strongly encouraged to apply.

This 15-20 hour per week paid position (hours are somewhat flexible) includes a strong possibility of continued employment beyond the academic year. This laboratory position will be focused around assistance in tree-ring chronology development, principally the inventory, preparation, and processing of tree-ring specimens. Some weekend fieldtrips may also be possible. The student will receive basic training in the methods of dendrochronology.

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords

 

My office is happy to offer an internship program for qualified students in my Tucson office. The internship program provides an opportunity for students to learn first hand how a congressional office operates. Interns work closely with my staff to create a team that is accessible and responsive to the constituents of Congressional District 8. Our internship opportunities are unpaid, but I am more than happy to work with students to help earn school credits.

 

Both part-time and full-time opportunities are available. Interns perform a variety of duties, including day-to-day administrative work, data entry, answering phones, drafting constituent correspondence, helping constituents work with federal agencies, and assisting staff

where necessary.

 

Please keep in mind that internships are competitive. Prospective interns will be contacted regarding an interview following a review of credentials. Priority will be given to those who are residents of Arizona’s 8th Congressional District.

 

Applications are accepted year round for fall, spring, and summer internships.  I recommend that you send in your resume as early as possible.

Actually Barbara is quite right, i agree with Steve that a story has to be told with atleast some direct or indirect emphasis on basic facts.
