David L Boren Undergraduate Scholarship Program
(Formerly NSEP -- National Security Education Program Fellowships for Undergraduates)
Purpose of the Award: The Boren Scholarship Program is intended to provide American undergraduates with the resources necessary to acquire experience in countries and areas of the world critical to the future security of the U.S. The Boren is designed to equip Americans with an understanding of less commonly taught languages and cultures; to build a critical base of future leaders who have cultivated international relationships; to develop a group of professionals who have extensive knowledge of language and culture; and to increase the number of faculty who can educate U.S. citizens toward these goals.
Nature of the Award: The award is for a minimum of one academic term. Juniors and seniors are encouraged to pursue full academic-year programs. Summer programs of six weeks of study are also available.
Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be U.S. citizens at the time of application, and must be matriculated as freshmen, sophomores, or juniors at accredited institutions of higher education. In addition, applicants must be applying to engage in a study abroad experience that meets home institution requirements, intending to study abroad, and planning to finish the study abroad program before graduation.
Selection Criteria: Boren recipients are selected on the basis of academic record and potential to succeed in the study abroad experience; commitment to international education; language interest and aptitude; and quality and relevance of proposed program for the purposes of the Boren.
Application Procedures: Boren applicants are required to secure the endorsement of their respective Boren Faculty Representatives. University of Arizona applicants must comply with both the UA deadline and the Boren deadline (see important dates). UA applicants must submit application materials, including the application form, at least two but no more than three letters of reference, and academic records for at least two years, to Dr. Karna Walter, Faculty Representative for the Boren. Applicants will have sufficient time to strengthen their applications between the UA deadline and the Boren deadline.
Nomination Procedures: There is no limit to the number of applicants the UA can nominate for the Boren. However, only applications of sufficient strength and quality will be forwarded to Boren. Regional screening panels and the national nominating committee will decide which applicants will be designated as Boren recipients.
Important Dates:
- January 17: Boren application materials must be submitted to Dr. Karna Walter.
- Mid-February (TBA): Boren application materials must be submitted to Boren.
