What are the prestigious national and international scholarships?

Virtually everyone has heard of the Rhodes Scholarship. Yet that program is one of many. The common thread woven among all these scholarships is that they are based on academic excellence and professional potential. Some awards are available to undergraduates - including freshmen - while others require that you be a graduating senior or graduate student. None of these awards are a guarantee for eventual professional accomplishment, but all are highly regarded and can be major assets toward career progress and personal development.

How competitive are they?

Extremely. But if you weren't a very accomplished student, you probably wouldn't be looking at this website. There are only two guarantees. First, a decision not to apply for a scholarship will assure that you do not win one. Second, the process of refining your goals and thinking with precision about yourself and your future - the essence of scholarship applications - is worth the effort even if you do not obtain the award you seek.

What qualities are important in seeking a scholarship?

Academic excellence is a starting point. A clear sense of professional promise should be evident. Many of the foundations that support prestigious scholarships also care about your personal qualities, notably the breadth of your interests and activities. Foundations emphasize personal initiative, maturity, social commitment, resilience, interpersonal skills and evidence of real leadership.

What is the role of International Studies and Scholarships?

We administer these programs for the University of Arizona. That mission includes recruiting appropriate students, serving as the University representative to the foundations, nominating applicants, and assisting students in creating the best applications possible.

What is the application procedure? Where do I start?

Right here. Go to the ncs programs page and start reading. International Studies and Scholarships can better assist you if you already have some sense of the basics of a scholarship. Often you will be able to download an application and occasionally it is possible to review older applications, both winners and those that have been eliminated from the competition for one reason or another. Once you have made that initial effort, please contact Dr. Walter in Slonaker House.
