Nationally Competitive Scholarships

Javits Fellowships

Purpose of the Award: The Javits Fellowship is intended to support exceptionally promising students as they undertake study for doctoral or Masters of Fine Arts degrees in selected fields in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Nature of the Award: The Javits Fellowship covers tuition and fees at the institutions in which Javits Fellows are enrolled; in addition, a stipend is provided for living expenses. Funding is subject to the availability of funds from the Department of Education; normally funding is extended for 48 months or for the duration of the graduate program, depending which condition is shorter in duration. Twenty percent of the awards are given in the social sciences, twenty percent in the arts, and sixty percent in the humanities.

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, permanent residents of the U.S., or citizens of one of the Freely Associated States. In addition, applicants must not have completed their first year of graduate study or they must be entering graduate school in the next academic year. As such, applicants must be enrolled in or admitted to an eligible degree program at an accredited institution in the U.S.

Selection Criteria: Javits fellows are chosen on the basis of demonstrated achievements and exceptional promise.

Application Procedures: Prospective applicants must request an application from the Department of Education (see Javits website listed below) or may obtain an application Dr. Karna Walter (contact information below). Application materials, including application forms, recommendations, personal statement, college transcripts, GRE scores, must be submitted to the U.S. Department of Education. The Javits Fellowship Board appoints panels of experts to determine which applicants will become Javits Fellows.

Applicants are not required to secure the official endorsement of their respective institutions; nonetheless, UA applicants are encouraged to consult with Dr. Karna Walter.

  • September 15: UA deadline
  • October 3: official Javits deadline
