Nationally Competitive Scholarships

James Madison Fellowships

The James Madison Fellowships were established in 1986 for the purpose of improving teaching about the United States Constitution in secondary schools. The Fellowships are intended for graduate study leading to a master’s degree in American history or political science, or a related area. Two types of fellowships are offered: Junior Fellowships, awarded to students who are about to complete, or have recently completed, undergraduate study and plan to begin graduate work; and Senior Fellowships, awarded to experienced teachers who wish to undertake work for a graduate degree on a part-time basis.

Individuals interested in applying should be U.S. citizens or nationals; teachers, or teachers-in-training, of American history or American government, or social studies at the secondary level; and bachelor’s degree holders by the start of the Fellowship. Additionally, individuals will be selected on the basis of commitment to a career teaching American history or a related field; devotion to civic responsibility; feasibility of proposed course of study; and intent to pursue and complete graduate study that emphasizes the constitution. Individuals compete only against other applicants from the states of their legal residence.

The application deadline for the University of Arizona is February 1, 2000; the Madison Fellowship deadline is March 1, 2000. Interested persons should contact Karna Walter, Graduate Associate for International Studies and Scholarships at The University of Arizona, to discuss application procedure (621-6546; karna@u.arizona.edu).
