Marshall Scholarships

Purpose of the Award: The Marshall Scholarship, awarded annually to as many as forty intellectually distinguished American applicants, was created to honor the ideals of the Marshall Plan, the European Recovery Program after World War II. Marshall Scholars do undergraduate or graduate study in a wide range of academic disciplines at the British university of their choice.

Nature of the Award: The Marshall Scholarship covers up to two years of undergraduate or graduate study in any discipline leading to a degree at a British university. The scholarship pays for tuition and fees, cost of living expenses, airfare, and other expenses incurred through the experience.

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be U.S. citizens at the time they apply for the scholarship, must have maintained a 3.7 GPA after the freshman year of college, and must be a graduate of an accredited four-year college or university in the U.S. after April of 2003.

Selection Criteria: Applicants are chosen based on their intellectual distinction, potential to become leaders and decision makers, motivation and seriousness of purpose, interest in the betterment of society, communication skills, and potential to promote British-American understanding.

Application Procedures: All Marshall applicants are required to secure the endorsement of their respective universities. Marshall applicants from the University of Arizona must meet both the UA deadline and the Marshall deadline (see important dates). UA applicants must submit the following to Dr. Karna Walter, the Marshall Faculty Representative at the University of Arizona: a completed Marshall application; an official college transcript or transcripts; a personal statement (1000 words) describing academic and other interests; a personal statement (500 words) describing what course of study and university the applicant is electing; and four letters of recommendation (to be submitted by recommenders to Dr. Walter). Students who are nominated have several weeks after the UA deadline to strengthen their applications before submitting them to the British Consulate-General for the Western region.**

**Please note: You are eligible to apply for the Marshall Scholarship in another region if you are a resident of a state outside of the Western region.

Nomination Procedures: Twenty candidates will be invited to interview in early November in Los Angeles, the southern California site of the British Consulate. A total of 44 scholarships will be awarded.

Important Dates:

  • September 7: Marshall applications due to Dr. Karna Walter
  • October 5: Marshall applications due to British Consulate-General in Los Angeles
