CONTEST
Eligibility: You must be an incoming freshman Honors student for Summer or Fall 2007 and officially join on The Honors College website.
Options (you may submit only one entry):
Written:
- Write a poem or an essay on the theme "Living in Two Worlds."
- Write an opinion piece in the form of an email to a group of friends on a topic on which you feel strongly.
Visual:
- Create a self portrait. Show yourself in the context of your culture.
- Create a portrait of a person in your family that you consider to be one of your family's storytellers.
Due Date: The hard copy and cover sheet must be placed in the contest drop box at the front desk of The Honors College on September 14 by by 5 PM. Entries may be mailed to: The Honors College PO Box 210006, Tucson, AZ 85721 or faxed to 621-8655. Entries by mail must be received by the 14th -- not just postmarked.
Criteria: Your work will be judged by a student panel for individuality, originality, and best expression of the theme of your chosen category.
Prizes: Eight finalists will receive lunch with the author, Tamim Ansary, on Friday, Oct. 19.
There may be other prizes -- stay tuned!
Format for submission:Written entries must be a hardcopy (not handwritten) with a running head that includes a title and page number (but not your name), one inch margins and a 12-point font. Poems have no minimum length, essays should be at least two pages doubled spaced and no written entry should be longer than five pages.
Visual entries may be any format such as photo, collage, drawing, or mixed media that results in a reasonably flat (no more than 3/8" inch thick) object that is not too delicate for the judges to handle. Your entry must be labeled on the back with a title that matches your cover sheet.
With your entry you must submit a cover sheet that includes:
- your full name
- your nine-digit student id number
- a phone number
- your preferred email
- your home town
- title of your entry
- visual works may include an artist's statement (optional)
Notification and Presentation: Winners will be notified by e-mail prior to the public presentation. Public presentation of the winners will take place at the Rumi poetry event scheduled for September 29th.
