The best part of my position is getting to know Honors students. I get to know many students while they are still in high school and then am among the first to welcome them to campus. Unlike the classroom where I see students for a semester, as Dean of The Honors College, I can follow students' progress during their time at the University, share their triumphs and frustrations, and sometimes help ease their way. My academic appointments are in Women’s Studies, Sociology and Higher Education. I teach courses on gender, sexuality, families and work. I also teach a course, Critical Issues in College Teaching, in the graduate program in Higher Education. My research interests include gender and sexuality, women and girls in science and math, gender in educational, employment and family settings, and intersections of gender and ethnicity. My current research focuses upon women attorneys in Europe and the United States.
I am very proud of several accomplishments: Kellogg Fellow, President of the Western Social Science Association, UA Creative Teacher, YWCA Woman on the Move, and Best Boss. The accomplishment that brings me the greatest pride is parenting my daughter. Keeping up with an active, creative teenager gives me a youthful perspective (and sore muscles from roller skating, bicycling and running bases). Aside from spending time with my daughter, I enjoy reading, writing poetry, gardening, hiking, traveling, photography, and needlework. In life I remind myself "Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely." (Karen Clark)
